A Brief but Amazing History of Ziplining
Ziplining probably seems most popular in movies and video games, when the main character effortlessly slides across a cable suspended in the air. But the history of ziplining has a strong basis in reality. There are over 200 recreational ziplines in North America, so they’re popular enough that we should know a little about the history. Read on, and you may find some pretty interesting facts about the art of ziplining!
Transportation
It may seem obvious for some, but it’s true. Zipliningwas frequently used in the past for transportation purposes. An example would be in mountainous regions that were too dangerous to travel through on foot, like the Alps. People would string up ziplines and transfer supplies, as well as humans. It’s pretty amazing how frequently they were used for practical purposes like this.
Exploration
Then, ziplines were used by biologists for exploration purposes. They couldn’t properly explore the rainforest, as vehicles were destructive and walking on foot was dangerous. In the 70s, they created ziplines, and “canopy tours”, to view the scene from above. So, Costa Rica began advertising this as a way to explore the rainforest in an ecologically friendly way. Ziplines are seemingly terrifying, which makes them a truly thrilling way to view nature. It’s exhilarating to fly through trees like a bird, and requires teamwork. In fact, ziplines are a large factor in rope courses around the world. As a team building activity, they require heavy safety precautions<, so it’s a great communicative way to bond.
