Just because you don’t own your own raft, it doesn’t mean you can’t hop on the river for a rafting adventure! At Southwest Raft and Jeep, we are excited to announce that we are now renting out rafts and gear for both single day and multi-day trips – because let’s face it, sometimes one day on the river just isn’t enough. Let’s explore what you can expect when rafting on the San Juan River and touch on some other local favorites.

San Juan River Rafting Trip

Interested in whitewater rafting on the San Juan River? You’re in luck, the San Juan peak river flows typically occur in late May and early June. The Navajo Dam in New Mexico controls San Juan River flows, with the Animas River serving as a major tributary. There are three major river access points for the San Juan River and four different trips you can take, ranging in length from 17-84 miles and duration from one day to 7. You can expect to bustle through class II and class III rapids that may require exciting and careful maneuvering. Here’s the breakdown of the river segments:

  • Montezuma Creek to Sand Island – 17 miles, 1-2 days
  • Sand Island to Mexican Hat – 27 miles, 2-3 days
  • Mexican Hat to Clay Hills –  57 miles, 4-5 days
  • Sand Island to Clay Hills – 84 miles, 6-7 days

Note: Clay Hills is the only feasible take-our below Mexican Hat due to a dangerous waterfall that flows downstream from Clay Hills. For more helpful information regarding camping, transportation, and planning your San Juan River trip, click here.

Whether you need a raft, frame, raft/frame combo, coolers, dry boxes, fire pans, inflatable kayaks, Stand Up Paddle Boards (SUP), or Paco pads – we’ve got you covered! We offer six types of raft rentals that range in price from $60/day to $125/day depending on the type of raft and duration of your trip. We ensure high quality, durability, and excellent performance from all of our up-to-date raft rentals. A 50% deposit will be required at the time of booking your raft rental and the balance will be due upon picking up your gear. Please note our cancellation policy and understand that failure to bring the gear back clean will result in a cleaning fee of $100.
