5 Myths About Whitewater Rafting
Whitewater rafting is, to the untrained eye, a sport for adrenaline junkies. Many people will hear the term and run, claiming many reasons why they simply can’t do it. There are a lot of myths surrounding whitewater rafting that give it an odd reputation, and when we hear these rumors, we shoot them down immediately. But to save you the trouble, here are five myths about whitewater rafting you may mistakenly believe.
Myth #1: You have to be an excellent swimmer.
When you wear your lifejacket properly, swimming is rarely an issue. The proper and safe way to protect yourself after you’ve been thrown from a raft is to point your feet downriver and float until you reach safety. Sure, you may need to make a few arm strokes, but your swimming skills do not need to be that of an Olympic team member. It’s no excuse to stay on land.
Myth #2: Rafting is dangerous.
Yes, there are risks involved whenever you partake in an adventure sport. But most of these risks come from malpractice and poor technique. Most rafting accidents come from inexperienced and unprofessional supervisors. Luckily, everyone at Southwest Raft & Jeep is trained to handle just about any situation you’ll run into on the river. In our hands, you’ll be safe throughout the entire trip.
Myth #3: Whitewater rafting is too extreme.
There are plenty of rivers with class 3 rapids and huge boulders that make a rafting trip incredibly difficult. But whitewater rafting courses come in all shapes and sizes. Chances are, when you’re rafting for the first time, no one is going to make you raft on rivers you aren’t ready for. Rafting is all about fun, not skill level. Don’t concern yourself with difficulty; anyone can go rafting, regardless of age, experience or strength.
